The Cost of Progress

Saturday, December 30, 2006
Over the last few months I have been working in Atlanta and living in a corporate dorm. The upside is that without any living expenses, I have been able to invest copious amounts of money into my ventures. The downside is that they do not provide any internet access or any way of getting it.

For the past three months I resorted to using dial up and computers in the open lab area. However, I could not login to the network on wireless or anything like that. To cut to the chase, what happened is it took so long to do anything on dialup that I was horribly unproductive over the last few months.

To combat this lack of productivity, I bought Sprint EVDO service to get broadband from wherever I may be within the us (network willing.) This device costs $59 a month, and connects to my Mac via USB. While it is a heck of a lot more expensive than dial up, and may not be incredibly fast, it helps me maintain motivation to put a lot more effort into my business.

I typically do not like to purchase things that increase overhead because I prefer purchasing services and products directly related to expanding my business. That being said, so far with this service, I am getting infinitely more done every month than with dialup. The surprising thing is that I am actually getting more accomplished than I have been in the past with broadband at my house. This is probably due to being motivated from the new found service, and the ability to not have to wait so much to get stuff done. (Dialup took about an hour to renew a few domains)

Another purchase that I made that was not related necessarily to growing profit in the short run was a book entitled “The successful business plan” by Rhonda Abrams. All the information was probably available online in some fashion or another. However, the book allows me to sit down and go through it chapter by chapter while working on revising my own business plan.
