Buying a Franchise
Sunday, July 23, 2006If you want to start a business, but either don't know what to do, or you don’t want to go in alone, then buying a franchise may be right for you. There are several advantages to buying a franchise that you need to know. There are also a few disadvantages that might make a franchise opportunity seem like a bad choice for you.
Easier Funding
With a franchise, you are buying the right to use someone else's proven business model. This means that you have a higher chance for success. With this larger chance of success, and proven research that is supplied by the franchise, you will probably have an easier chance at obtaining a loan to start your business. This is especially useful if this is your first business venture and you do not have very much report to business bankers.
Easier to Setup and Run
With a franchise you typically do not have to make all the critical decisions for the business. While you will have to decide on location, and deal with all that, the setup of the building and where you get products is usually detailed to the t. This means that you do not have to worry about who will be your supplier or what kind of marketing material to use. This has all been sorted out for you.
It is also easier to run a franchise because they divide the jobs very concisely already. How often have you seen the owner at a Burger King or Subway? I have never seen them there, well at least by coincidence anyways. This shows that once you setup your business you can keep it fairly hands-off and your manager will deal with all the day to day stuff. Which allows you to concentrate on the bigger picture and your next move?
You Don't Have much Freedom
This is the downside of a franchise. If you are looking for a business to be a refreshing project that you can do a lot of fun things with, then you are probably in the wrong avenue of business. Franchises are typically pretty rigid in what you can, and cannot do. Most of them value consistency from one branch to another. They also typically force you to buy products from them which may be at a price that is above market rates. This will cut into your profit margin a bit.
Overall, a franchise can be a good opportunity to start out in the business world. If you are a person that wants to create everything then it may not be the best avenue. However, if you just want to turn some capital into some passive income then it is a great way for you to do so.
